I need to start this month by grovelling and apologising most profusely.  I always try to warn you when the price of stamps is about to increase, but, this time, it completely missed me.  I woke up on the morning of 7th April to discover that the price of both First- and Second-class stamps had increased.  I spent the rest of the day in shock; I had let you all down.  All I can say is, “I’m so sorry”.  You could give me the sack, but, short of that happening, I will continue, and try to do better next time.

STOP PRESS!  We have an Open Morning coming up!  Local suppliers such as Wiston and Smock Alley will be exhibiting their wine, and, if you speak very nicely to them, you may be able to sample their products.  There will be other suppliers, including local artists, but you will have to come to find out who they are.  The all-important date for your diary is: Saturday 30th May: 10:30-12:30.

I’m sure you will have heard that there is an epidemic of shoplifting going on nationally, especially of items like chocolate.  But please don’t lie in bed at night worrying about that happening here, and whether it could jeopardise our future.  I’m sure it’s not a problem – we know many of our customers well, and call you our friends.  We value all of you, and appreciate your custom and support, without which we would not be here.  But I will take this opportunity to reassure you all that we have excellent CCTV coverage of everything that goes on in the shop, and that many of our volunteers and staff are ex-teachers or mothers (or both), and it is a well-known fact that they have eyes in the back of their head!

The advent of warmer weather and longer days sadly heralds that time of year when exams start.  Horror of horrors!  We can’t actually do the revision for you, but we do want to support you through this season as much as we can.  We stock post-its and revision cards, and, of course a selection of Good Luck cards.  We also have a good supply of chocolate and other confectionery, which always help concentration (or so I’ve been very reliably informed!).

And now for some good news.  The ice cream freezer has come out of hibernation and is full of your favourites, all ready for you.  So, when you next pass by, why don’t you pause awhile, and step inside to choose the ice you’d like, and say hello to us at the same time?

May is also the month of Bank Holidays – another GOOD THING.  Our shop opening hours are:

Monday 4th May: 7:00-12:30

Monday 25th May: 7:00-12:30

And, with that happy prospect in sight, I’ll bid you adieu for another month.  Au revoir and Goodbye.
